Motherwell and Wishaw MP Frank Roy has backed the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s plan to highlight and commemorate a number of unmarked First World War graves.

At a meeting with the commission Mr Roy learned it will install a single memorial for the two First World War graves within the Dalziel Burial Ground in Netherton and restore the 12 World War One graves in Motherwell’s Globe Cemetery.

This is part of the commission’s work in the run up to the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

Mr Roy said: “Men and women from all over our area died serving their country in both World Wars and the immense sacrifice which they made should never be forgotten.

“Those who died during the First World War paid the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our country and lost their lives often at a very young age. It is a great injustice that they have lain in unmarked graves for almost 50 years.

“I am also pleased that following discussions with North Lanarkshire Council arrangements have been made to improve the general maintenance of these two burial grounds.“

Meanwhile, Mr Roy and Motherwell and Wishaw MSP John Pentland are demanding Lloyds TSB reconsiders closing its contact centre in Airbles Road, Motherwell, which would transfer 2,000 workers to Glasgow.

They expressed their opposition in the Motherwell Times last month and now seek a meeting with the chief executive of Lloyds and plan to refer the issue to the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards.

Mr Pentland said: “Lloyds share price is doing well on the back of such treatment of employees, so I’m sure Lloyds’ executives will be looking for fat bonuses, but there should be no reward for treating employees this way.

“The Government still has a stake in the bank, and should not condone such behaviour.”

Mr Roy added: “I remain concerned that workers are not being given enough information, and that Lloyds are simply turning their back on our area.”

A Lloyds spokesman said the company were still consulting with staff.
