An apprentice mechanic from Newarthill has landed a top national award.

Michael Guinnane (21) from Newarthill won Apprentice of the Year for Transport and Vehicle Maintenance at the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) Awards.

He is employed by North Lanarkshire Council as an apprentice based at the transport depot in Bellshill where he is studying for an SVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.

His role involves carrying out maintenance programmes for the council’s large fleet of vans, minibuses, bin lorries and other vehicles.

As part of his submission to the awards scheme, Michael had to prepare a detailed report on his work and learning before being interviewed by APSE judges.

Michael said: “I love my job and am absolutely thrilled to have won this award. I’d like to thank all my council workshop colleagues and staff at LAGTA for their help and support.”

Council environmental services committee convener Helen McKenna added: “Michael has proved himself as a skilled apprentice mechanic, who works hard to complete his coursework and learn from the experience of his colleagues in our fleet operations section.

“The APSE awards attract entrants from across the UK so this is an outstanding achievement for Michael. It recognises his commitment and enthusiasm for his chosen profession and is very well deserved.”
