Matches to score for good causes

THE organisers of two charity football matches this Sunday are hoping for good turnouts to help deserving causes.

A game in memory of Bellshill man John Scott takes place at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.

John’s cousin Danny Braidwood has organised the 11-a-side ‘friends v family’ game which kicks off at 2pm, with all proceeds going to Let the Children Live!

The charity works in Colombia with children from the streets and shanty-towns of the city of Medellín to safeguard their lives from poverty and violence and provide them with a future.

John, of Community Road, was found dead at the age of 21 in the South Calder Water, near Bellshill Golf Club last summer, three days after being reported missing.

Meanwhile, cancer charities will benefit from a match for a young footballer who plays for a team in Viewpark.

Sean Rooney (15), of Calderbraes Boys’ Club, is getting treatment for cancer and his family, from Cambuslang, have joined forces with Viewpark charity John Brown Memorial to organise a game at Lesser Hampden, home of Queens Park, this Sunday.

It features Emirates Scottish Junior Cup runners-up Auchinleck Talbot against a team selected by former Thorniewood manager John Fallon.

The game kicks off at 3.45pm and entry is by programme, costing £5.

A bus for supporters will leave Thorniewood United Social Club at 2.45pm and the cost is £5.

Funds will be boosted further by a cabaret evening featuring Southside at the club on Sunday night.
