Man jailed for biting off chunk of pal’s ear

HAMILTON SHERIFF COURT

HAMILTON SHERIFF COURT

A man bit off part of his friend’s ear during a fight outside their homeless accommodation in Motherwell.

Barrie Paton (30), of Mason Gardens, was locked up for 18 months at Hamilton Sheriff Court. He admitted assaulting Andrew Garner in Watson Street, Motherwell, on February 2 last year.

The court heard the vicious attack was captured by CCTV and a piece of the ear was found in the street.

However, the victim refused to give police a statement and there was no medical report about the extent of the injury.

Paton, who also admitted punching his pal repeatedly and pinnng him to the ground, was told he would have been given a two-year stretch but for his guilty plea.

Defence agent Tom Watters said the pair lived in a homeless hostel. They had been drinking and taking drugs then a fight started.

Mr Watters told the court: “My client has no recollection of the incident and when confronted with the evidence was deeply remorseful.”

More from the court in the Times and Speaker every week.
