A man faces charges of attempted murder and serious assault after three Polish men were allegedly stabbed in Motherwell.

William Winnie (24), of Dinmont Crescent, Motherwell, appeared in private at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

He faced one charge of assault to severe injury and attempted murder, and two charges of assault to severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

Three men - aged 48, 36 and 32 - were taken to Wishaw General Hospital after a disturbance at an address in Dinmont Crescent on Monday night.

One of the alleged victims was detained in hospital for treatment.

Winnie, who was represented by solicitor Diarmid Bruce, was also accused of vandalism, threatening or abusive behaviour and police assault.

He made no plea and the case was continued for further enquiries.

Winnie was remanded in custody by Sheriff Ray Small and is due to appear in court again next week.
