Lorry driver jailed over cigarette smuggling
Jailed lorry driver Timothy Shaw
A LORRY driver from Motherwell has been jailed for 21 months after he was caught smuggling millions of bootleg cigarettes into the United Kingdom.
Timothy Shaw (50), of Macrius Way, was one of four gang members sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court in Kent this week.
HM Revenue and Customs investigators stopped his lorry at the port of Newhaven in March 2010 and seized more than seven million counterfeit cigarettes.
The tax evaded on the load was estimated at £1.7 million.
Neighbours of Shaw, who lives in a smart detached house in a North Motherwell estate, spoke of their surprise on hearing of his conviction.
They said they had no idea what he had been up to.
More on this story in next week’s Motherwell Times, out on Wednesday, September 26.
