Learning while earning
Mary Thomson
In this, Scottish Apprenticeship Week, the Times & Speaker has been finding out about modern apprenticeships which allow young people to learn while they earn.
Motherwell firm JHP has been helping people into work for over 20 years, and regional sales consultant Colin Williams says despite the recession opportunities are out there.
He said: “These are certainly difficult times, but its not all doom and gloom.
“We have a social responsibility to young people and there are certainly opportunities there for them to grow and develop.”
Despite a growth in the hospitality industry, retail remains JHP’s biggest sector, and Mary Thomson, Primark retail operative in Motherwell, explained how she has been helped by a modern apprenticeship.
She said: “My manager had a few of us around the same age and told us starting the modern apprenticeship programme would help us gain a qualification.
“It’s great because I don’t need to go to take days off to go to college meaning I can gain a qualification while I work.”
The scheme has also been backed by Central Scotland list MSP Clare Adamson.
