Jobs saved as Bison plant is spared axe

THE owners of the Bison concrete factory in Uddingston have done a u-turn over plans to shut the plant with the loss of 55 jobs.

Earlier this year Bison’s parent company Laing O’Rourke said the axe was to fall on the factory once current orders had been fulfilled, blaming the depressed state of construction and manufacturing markets.

They said the Uddingston operation had been making losses over a sustained period of time and the situation could not be allowed to continue.

But this week the firm said it had decided to keep the plant open, although with a reduced workforce, following a consultation process.

A spokesperson said: “Through consultation with our workforce and by speaking with our supply chain, we have been able to identify a series of measures to enhance efficiency and create a viable future plan for Bison.

“Consequently, at Bison Uddingston, rather than closing the facility, the plan is to keep it open but with a reduced workforce.”

The firm’s announcement was welcomed by Central Scotland SNP list MSP Richard Lyle who met senior management from the firm during the consultation process and put forward a case for the retention of the plant.

And local councillor Bob Burrows said he was pleased the plant was staying open in the short term, although he sounded a note of caution over long-term prospects.
