Jamie is a business whiz at 27

Firm backed by UK Steel Enterprise

Reporting: BRIAN YULE

A YOUNG Motherwell entrepreneur is developing his second business venture with support from UK Steel Enterprise.

Jamie Delaney (27) launched AESL Mechanical Services (MS) Ltd in April this year, just two years after he established his first company, AESL Ltd.

AESL now employs 80 staff, including 20 apprentices, and having posted a turnover of 2.6 million in only its second year of trading is on target for turnover in excess of 5million for 2006/07.

AESL MS Ltd, based in Albert Road, Motherwell, provides mechanical services such as heating, plumbing and ventilation, complementing the electrical installation work currently carried out by sister company AESL Ltd.

An electrician by trade, Jamie has worked in the construction industry for over 10 years and started his career as an apprentice.

After working for FES Ltd and Thomas and Adamson he decided to go it alone.

After receiving funding from UKSE Jamie was able to launch AESL MS Ltd and he has already set his sights on further expansion.

Jamie, originally from Cleland but now lives in Dalziel Park, Motherwell, said: "I knew there was a market for a company like AESL Ltd when I first launched it back in July 2004 but the past two years have been a remarkable journey. Having built up a workforce of 80 skilled tradesmen, we are now in the position where we are regularly securing contracts from many leading players in the construction industry.

"Electrical services have always been the mainstay of AESL Ltd but there has been a steady rise in demand for mechanical services.

"We had previously outsourced this work to contractors but it was becoming increasingly difficult to manage and control so it made sense to bring it inhouse.

SOUND

"UKSE provided me with the necessary funding to launch AESL MS and with 20 staff now in place I'm hoping to create a further 20 positions over the course of the next two years."

Anne Clyde, area manager of UKSE, said: "Jamie is a real success story. It's not often that you meet a 27-year-old who has set up and managed two extremely profitable businesses. He has surrounded himself with a sound management team and has built up some strong contacts in the industry. This has resulted in the company gaining preferred supplier status with a number of key clients ensuring that it continues to win contracts."
