Jailed killer dies while training for freedom
A KILLER has died in prison while on a training for freedom programme.
John Keenan (50) had served almost half of a sentence of six years and three months for the culpable homicide of Alan O’Connor at the victim’s flat in Motherwell.
A Scottish Prison Service spokesman said: “The prisoner died in custody on Monday, August 13.
“The police have been advised and the matter will be reported to the procurator fiscal. A fatal accident inquiry might be held in due course.”
Keenan died at HMP Castle Huntly, near Dundee, an open prison where inmates are helped to prepare for life back in the community.
Mr O’Connor (48) was stabbed to death at his flat in Dalziel Tower in January 2009.
Keenan, who smacked the victim with a crowbar, admitted culpable homicide.
His son John jnr, who stabbed Mr O’Connor, admitted murder and was jailed for a minimum of 12 years and seven months.
