It’s the final countdown

MOTHERWELL residents will have to endure two weekends of further disruption before the town centre roadworks are finally complete.

Contractors aim to have put the finishing touches to the nine-month £1.2 million project which stretches from Motherwell station on Muir Street to the junction of Hamilton Road and High Road by the end of this month.

However, before that they need to lay the new road surface which will take over October 13/14 and 20/21 when means extending the existing closures.

The first of the new closures will take in Pollock Street, from the junction with the GLO Centre, along Merry Street to the junction with West Hamilton Street.

The closure will come into effect between 6pm on the Saturday (October 13) and midnight the next day with traffic being diverted around Mentieth Road and West Hamilton Street.

The next weekend will see the main bulk of the existing closure resurfaced, but will require Hamilton Road to be closed off from the junction with Avon Street to the junction with West Hamilton Street, again from 6pm on the Saturday (October 20) until midnight the next day.

However, this time there will be major diversions in place for all vehicles, although buses and taxis travelling towards Wishaw will be able to use Merry Street on this occasion.

Those on West Hamilton Street trying to get onto Hamilton Road should travel up to Brandon Street and subsequently Windmillhill Street before using Airbles Road and vice-versa in the opposite direction.

Anyone on Hamilton Road wishing to get to Farm Street should access it via Orchard Street and Farm Road.

As soon as the works are finished the roads will be opened.

Meanwhile the junction between Hamilton Road and Tinkers Lane will be closed on Sunday for carriageway patching.
