Investigation after Bellshill park fire

POLICE in Bellshill are appealing for witnesses after vandals started a fire at Sandy Park.
The incident, which occurred around 9.15pm on Thursday, came as the Bellshill Local Area Team (LAT) called for community involvement in its regeneration.
The Speaker reported last week that the LAT hopes to transform Sandy Park and Orbiston Bing - both identified as ‘anti-social hot spots’ - and is urging local residents to put forward their suggestions.
It is believed the fire was started at a children’s play area after youths set a stolen wheelie bin alight. Firefighters attended and extinguished the blaze, and no one is thought to have been injured.
PC Alan Mulholland, of Bellshill police office, said: “It is clear that youths who gather in the park are likely to have been involved in this, and we are keen to establish who was in the area on Thursday evening.
“Youths who hang around in the park are also causing issues for residents of nearby Garfield Drive as they make their way through to the area.
“Prior to the fire, wheelie bins were stolen from around the local area which are also used to start fires.
“I would appeal to anyone with information regarding the fire or the bin thefts to call Bellshill police office on 01698 202400.”
