THE heartbroken wife of a man who died following a tragic road accident in Motherwell has spoken of her grief.

Barry-John Evans, known as BJ, passed away after an incident on Shields Road, Muirhouse, on August 2.

The 35-year-old father of four was heading to Wishaw General Hospital after suffering chest pains at his home on Cornelia Street, but suffered a heart attack at the wheel of his Subaru Impreza.

The car crossed the central reservation and collided with another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. The other driver, a 54-year-old man, was released from hospital after receiving treatment.

BJ’s devastated widow, Lynne Evans (34), told the Times her husband was a ‘family man’ and would never have taken risks in the car that was ‘his pride and joy’.

She said: “BJ had chest pains in the house. He went for a lie down on his bed and then said the pains had gone away.

“But he burst into the living room later and said his chest was sore again and that he was going to the hospital.

“I said I would drive him there, but he said he would be quicker going on his own rather than getting the kids all ready.

“He said he would phone me as soon as he got there, but I got a call from my cousin instead with news of the accident.

“The post mortem says first and foremost that BJ had heart disease and that he had basically taken a major heart attack in the car.

“I haven’t spoken with the other driver, he’s too upset. But I have spoken to his sister and she said the family don’t blame BJ for what happened.”

BJ, originally from Dunfermline, moved to Motherwell after meeting Lynne 13 years ago.

His distinctive blue Subaru was popular with his children - stepdaughter Nicole (15), son Barry-John (11), daughter Julie (9) and son Steven (5) - as it was often decorated with stickers and motifs.
