Hamster dumped in Motherwell Park

THE Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a hamster was dumped inside a cage at a Motherwell park.

A member of the public discovered the creature in Dalziel Park last Thursday and handed her in to Scotland’s animal welfare charity.

The brown and white female hamster had been left beside a pile of rubbish and become stuck inside a hole in the cage.

She is now recovering from her ordeal at the Scottish SPCA’s Lanarkshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre, where she has been named Selina.

Centre assistant manager Lorraine Alba said: “The lady said she had to free little Selina as she was trapped inside a hole in the bottom of her cage, which had a plastic base and wire top.

“It’s possible she had chewed through the bottom to try and get out or it could be that the hole was already there.

“Selina is a timid wee girl and she was understandably quite distressed when she arrived here.

“No animal deserves to be dumped like a piece of rubbish and we are very keen to trace the person responsible.”

Abandoning an animal is an offence and anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.

Anyone with information about this abandonment is being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
