Half of casualty cases are drunks

A DOCTOR has claimed half of patients who attend accident and emergency wards in Lanarkshire hospitals are drunk.

Matthew Lehane, of Wishaw General Hospital, was being questioned about injuries sustained by Christopher Stevenson during a disturbance in Bellshill.

Philip Clemenson was on trial at Hamilton Sheriff Court last week. He was accused of striking Mr Stevenson on the head with a bottle and stabbing him on the body to his severe injury.

Dr Lehane (35) said the victim was treated for two superficial stab wounds on his left buttock.

He told solicitor Alan Murray, defending Clemenson, that Mr Stevenson (23) was ‘unco-operative’ in the accident and emergency ward.

The patient was ‘intoxicated’ and this was shown in the way he talked and the fact he was unsteady on his feet.

Dr Lehane added: “Maybe 50 per cent of people in Lanarkshire accident and emergency departments show similar behaviour.”

Clemenson (39), of Calder Road, Mossend, denied attacking Mr Stevenson at a house in Thorndean Avenue, Bellshill, on October 21 last year.

The jury took just 30 minutes to find him not guilty.
