Join in our Christmas appeal!

THIS week we are appealing for YOUR help as we officially launch our special Christmas Present Appeal, run in conjunction with the Salvation Army.

The campaign aims to distribute gifts to babies, children and teenagers from families in need throughout our circulation area.

It is also appealing for presents for older people so that everyone in our community can experience the joy the festive season brings.

Our campaign runs until Friday, December 14, and donations can be dropped off to our office at 29 Hope Street, Motherwell, ML1 1BT, from today.

All toys and gifts will be collected by Salvation Army staff and volunteers and distributed through the organisation’s own networks, social services and other local groups in time for Christmas morning helping Santa make it a special day for everyone.

Donations should be new and unwrapped - and remember they don’t need to be expensive as it is the thought that counts.

Gift ideas include soft toys, dolls and action figures, books, suitable CDs and DVDs, art sets, jigsaws, board games and puzzles.

Clothes, including socks and underwear, as well as winter accessories such as hats and scarves will also be gratefully received.

Items such as toiletries, diaries and calendars, chocolates and biscuits are great gifts for older people.

Community groups, offices and schools are urged to take part in the campaign, which can make a real difference to local youngsters and pensioners this festive season.

And the Times & Speaker wants to hear of all the good work being carried out by our readers in the communities, and then spread the word for all to see!

Those taking part can call us to arrange a suitable photocall on

Times & Speaker editor Martin Clark said: “We know that this is a difficult time for most people but our readers are very special. They are always prepared to help others who are in need.

“Every year we are staggered by their generosity - they are always willing to dig deep to support this special appeal. From the very young to our older readers, the response is always incredible.

“So let’s do it again to help the Salvation Army Christmas Present Appeal.”
