Funding boost for youth enemployment charity

ROUTES to Work has been awarded over £100,000 to boost youth employment in North Lanarkshire

Formed in 2002, Routes to Work is an independent charitable company which provides free employability services to long-term unemployed and other disadvantaged residents across the local authority area.

The organisation is currently sponsored by North Lanarkshire Council and Voluntary Action North Lanarkshire and their tremendous work was recognised by the Scottish Government which awarded £113,146 as part of funds delivered to voluntary sector projects to boost youth employment.

The funds are coming from the Scottish Government’s Third Sector and the Social Enterprise Challenge Fund.

Since 2003 the company has provided services to more than 17,000 people and assisted around 8,400 into work throughout North Lanarkshire.

Central Scotland list MSP John Wilson welcomed the funding.

He said: “Unemployment is a major concern for many and it is an issue that can only be tackled by involving local organisations as well as national bodies working in partnership throughout the country.

“By funding Routes to Work, the Scottish Government and Social Enterprise certainly demonstrate their commitment to improving the lives of young people in North Lanarkshire.

“With this award, the work carried out by Routes to Work and its chief executive Robin Turner is being acknowledged and supported. I am sure it will greatly help the company to successfully develop new projects that will bring more people into work.

“Without a doubt, more funding will also encourage Mr Turner and his team to pursue their efforts in delivering an increased range of services to the people of North Lanarkshire.

“I would like to congratulate Routes to Work for their well-deserved award and I wish them every success in the future.”
