Fresh new dawn for Uddingston workers

DAWNFRESH Seafoods in Uddingston has signed its first Learning Agreement with the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU).

This means nearly 300 workers at the Bothwellpark Industrial Estate firm will benefit from the scheme, supported by the BFAWU Development Fund project.

The Learning Agreement establishes a joint employer/trade union steering group, which commits both parties to work together to support the learning development of the Dawnfresh workforce.

Supported by Scottish Union Learning and other partners, Dawnfresh and the BFAWU will facilitate a range of work-based courses as well as exploring other workforce development opportunities, such as Modern Apprenticeships and Skills Utilisation initiatives.

These aims are linked with the Scottish Government’s strategy, ‘Skills for Scotland: Accelerating the Recovery and Increasing Sustainable Economic Growth’.

Dawnfresh HR director Helen Muir said: “The food sector is a highly competitive, changing and dynamic environment, and we, as the employer, understand that in order to develop as a business, we require to develop our most valued asset - our employees.

“That is why we are committed to working with our trade union partners to provide the very best learning opportunities to help them as individuals and also assist in ensuring that we continue to prosper as a business.”

Jim McClelland, BFAWU regional organiser, added: “We look forward to working with Dawnfresh towards the common goal of making lifelong learning a reality for the workforce.”
