Firefighter Cameron gets royal approval
A FORMER Motherwell firefighter has been awarded the Queen’s Fire Service Medal in the New Year’s Honours’ List.
Cameron Black (51) has saved thousands of lives around the world by dedicating his career to reducing road fatalities in dozens of developing countries.
Now a Group Commander, Cameron has risen steadily through the ranks since joining Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service in 1978.
His work to establish a multi-faceted programme to target young drivers and passengers aged between 16-25 years, entitled ‘Cut it Out’, won a prestigious National Road Safety Award, and was adopted as Strathclyde’s principle road safety initiative.
In 2002, Cameron and his Motherwell fire station colleagues helped establish the Scottish Burned Children’s Club charity.
The organisation helps to rehabilitate children who have suffered burn injuries and provides support to their parents.
He is also secretary to the World Rescue Organisation (WRO), which he helped establish.
The married dad-of-three, from Blantyre, said: “Receiving this award has really knocked me out. It was a complete surprise. To be recognised in such a way is an honour.”
