A MOTHERWELL primary school is facing the axe as part of a cost-cutting exercise being carried out by North Lanarkshire Council

Calder Primary has been earmarked by council officials for closure next summer with pupils being relocated at either Muir Street or Glencairn Primary.

Councillors were informally briefed on the plans this week and a formal proposal will go before a meeting of the council’s learning and leisure committee on October 1.

The council is being forced to identify potential savings of up to £100 million as part of its budget process and officials say the closure of Calder makes sense because it is no longer cost effective with over 50 per cent of capacity unoccupied.

And they believe closure of the 105-year-old school will bring savings which could be reinvested or help to minimise savings in other council services.

Most of the affected pupils would be transferred to Muir Street with a smaller number switching to Glencairn.

The proposal would also involve the closure of Calder’s nursery class with provision relocated ‘elsewhere within the Motherwell area’.

As part of the consultation a public meeting will be held at Braidhurst High School on Wednesday, October 24, at 7pm.

People can give their views until November 20 by writing to Calder Primary School and Nursery Class consultation, Learning and Leisure Services, Municipal Buildings, Kildonan Street, Coatbridge, or by e-mail to calderconsultation@northlan.gov.uk.
