End of the road for Lanarkshire bus company

A BUS firm called it a day last week, suddenly scrapping its services throughout Lanarkshire.

McKindless, which ran its number 9, 41 and 56 services through Motherwell, quit operations from 7pm on Friday.

It is believed the move left over 100 members of staff in the lurch, while the group also cancelled its school contracts with North Lanarkshire Council.

The Times & Speaker made several calls to the company's bases in Bogside, near Newmains, and Glasgow, but these were unanswered.

Public notices from Strathclyde Partnership for Transport were posted at bus stops throughout the area informing passengers of the change.

Some of the abandoned routes are still covered by First, Irvine's Coaches, JJ Travel, Coakley, McNairn's Coaches and Whitelaw.

The number 41 service, which goes from Lanark to Hamilton via Carluke, Wishaw and Motherwell, was taken over by Irvine's 48 bus at short notice.

The Law-based company said it had taken on some of the McKindless staff and interviews were ongoing.

The First group has also moved to serve the 41 route with a new 243 service, but this is not scheduled to start until April 16

.

The company also confirmed that it is recruiting PCV holders and would welcome applications from McKindless staff who hold the licence.

McKindless's decision to quit also affected school runs at four Wishaw schools, including Clyde Valley High. Temporary transport has been put in place.
