Drivers pass the test
Superintendent Jim Baird is happy with last weeks results, but admits there is still work to do.
ALL drivers stopped by officers during a festive crackdown on drink and drug driving passed a road side breath test.
Last Monday (December 17) road policing officers carried out the breath tests on 894 motorists at eight locations throughout the force area, including Windmillhill Street in Motherwell.
The checks were carried out as part of the ACPOS Festive Drink Drug Drive which launched at the start of the month and on this occasion all drivers blew negative results.
Superintendent Jim Baird, head of road policing, said: “The results are encouraging and I can say that it is not often when we do these kind of checks that all motorists pass.
“The campaign was all about highlighting road safety and keeping people safe on Strathclyde’s roads.
“I would hope that by continuing with our high profile, high visibility policing, people will get the message and not give in to the temptation to drink and drive.
“However, we can never be complacent. There will always be those who think they will be ok to drive and who ultimately put their lives, those of family and friends and others at risk.
“Especially at this time of year when people travel to celebrate Christmas and New Year with families, it is imperative that if you want to drink – don’t take the car. It is not worth the risk.
“My officers will be out looking for drink drivers throughout Christmas and New Year.
“If you drink and drive you are likely to get caught, get a criminal conviction, lose your licence and potentially your car as well.”
Since the launch of the campaign officers have caught 54 people over the drink drive limit or driving under the influence of a drug.
Eight of the 54 (15 per cent) caught will suffer the possibility of having their vehicles forfeited due to them either being repeat offenders (two), three times or more over the drink drive limit (three) or had refused to provide specimens of either breath, blood or urine (three).
Of the those arrested, 44 were male and 10 were female, and of young drivers, aged 17- 25, 10 males and one female were arrested.
