Dog track owner dies

Carfin businessman Pat Heffernan died last week at the age of 87.

Mr Heffernan was best known for running Carfin Dog Track for nearly 60 years, having taken over the ownership from his father Thomas, until its closure in 1999.

As well as bringing the dogs to Lanarkshire, he and brother John also owned the Armadale Stadium in West Lothian.

In addition Mr Heffernan ran a fleet of 17 vans which delivered newspapers on behalf of Menzies.

He lived in Newarthill Road with his wife Mary for many years, but as his health deteriorated latterly he became resident at Park Springs Care Home in Motherwell.

He passed away peacefully and is survived by Mary and children Clare, Tom, Keiran, Moria and Patricia.
