Dixie the sniffer dog is the hero of the week with North Lanarkshire Trading Standards team, following a successful operation to uncover a haul of illicit tobacco and pirate DVDs worth £40,000 in Motherwell and Bellshill.

The raid was set in place following information gathered by Trading Standards over recent months and resulted in officers from the council and Police Scotland targeting three premises where they found the illegal goods.

Dixie works with Stirling Council and is trained to search for tobacco products and she was brought in by North Lanarkshire Council to help make this operation a success.

Councillor Helen McKenna commented: “This sends out a strong message to the people who trade in illegal goods the we will take direct action to stop them. Dealers often targer children to sell the counterfeit tobacco to which encourages them to take up smoking at an early age.

“The trade also has strong links to organised crime so anyone buying is funding other illegal activities like drugs, alcohol smuggling and money laundering.

“We will now undertake further investigations.”
