The environmental improvement scheme which will close Muir Street and Hamilton Road, Motherwell, for a year is now under way.
As detailed in last week’s Motherwell Times, the roads from the junction with High Road to Motherwell rail station will be closed for up to 16 months to allow MacLay Civil Engineering Ltd to carry out the £1.2 million works.
Work has begun at Motherwell station for the next eight weeks, during which time Scottish Water will spend a week replacing pipes on the main thoroughfare while MacLay carries out exploratory work to locate the utilities.
In total MacLay hope to complete the project in 50 weeks, working from 7.30am-5pm, five days a week.
A traffic marshall has been employed to man a barrier which will allow delivery drivers and network rail workers access to the road via the Hope Street roundabout but keep them away from the construction zone.
Those at the other end of the street have been advised to use the loading bay on Merry Street to get their deliveries, but the traffic marshall will have no powers to keep it clear.
During construction, pedestrian access will be maintained but taxis will not be allowed to use the same access point as the delivery drivers and buses and all other traffic will be forced to use the West Hamilton Street, Monteith Road, Hope Street ring road.
The bus stops outside the station will be closed for the duration with passengers advised to use either the proceeding or succeeding stops as no changes to the network are planned. Similarly disabled people looking to access the station will be advised to travel to Hamilton.
However, it is local traders who will be most affected by the closure, with many upset they were not properly consulted when the project was drawn up and fearing a sizeable effect on their businesses.
