Council score an own goal over pitch prices

AN official from a boys' football team in Bellshill claims new charges for using the town's Sir Matt Busby Complex could force clubs out of existence.

The secretary of the club, who didn't want to be named, said clubs face a 33 per cent increase in their let fees when new charges being introduced by North Lanarkshire Council come into effect next month.

But the rises have been defended by North Lanarkshire Leisure who say they are part of an effort to standardise charges throughout the area and were agreed after consultation with pitch users.

The new fees mean clubs who currently book for one and a half or one and three-quarter hours will no longer be able to do so but will have to choose either a one-hour or a two-hour booking.
