Council rejects Sainsbury’s in Motherwell
NORTH Lanarkshire Council has rejected Sainsbury’s proposal to open a store in Motherwell.
The supermarket giant had earmarked the former bus garage site on Hamilton Road to build the 60,000 sq ft supermarket with another 35,000 sq ft given over to warehousing and offices.
However, the council’s planning department recommended refusal as it went against the local plan due to it not being a town centre location.
The council’s planning hearing committee heard arguments from Sainsbury’s and site owners Barratt Homes as to why the application should be allowed, why the main opposition Chester Properties, owners of the Brandon Shopping Centre, argued against it.
Around two dozen members of the members were also allowed to have their say both in support and against the plan as a packed public gallery watched on.
After the hearing a full council meeting was convened to take a vote on the application.
Mossend and Holytown councillor Jimmy Coyle was seconded by Motherwell North councillor Helen McKenna as he moved the officials recommendation be followed.
An amendment that the application be passed was made by SNP group leader David Stocks on the grounds that Motherwell could support two supermarkets, seconded by Murdostoun councillor Alan Clinch.
A vote of 28-14 in favour of the motion meant the Sainsbury’s application was rejected leading to a chorus of boos and catcalls from the public gallery.
