Council adopts plan

NORTH Lanarkshire Council has formally adopted the North Lanarkshire Local Plan (NLLP), which is now the key planning policy for the area.

The plan was adopted following approval by Scottish Ministers and copies are available at www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk, libraries and some council offices including Motherwell Civic Centre. Letters have been sent to anyone who made representations on the Finalised Draft NLLP to tell them that the document has been adopted.

The plan includes changes recommended by the Scottish Government Reporters following a formal examination earlier this year.

Interested parties have until the middle of November to challenge the adoption of the plan at the Court of Session, however this can only be done on the grounds of process or law.

Councillor James Coyle, convener of the planning and transportation committee, said: “This document is the blueprint for the future development of North Lanarkshire.

“It provides a framework for decisions on all planning applications, and allows us to make sure that new developments are created in the right places to meet local needs and are of the correct standard.”

Current planning legislation means the council will now start work on its first Local Development Plan. This will include a more detailed strategy and priorities for the economic and physical development of North Lanarkshire, supported by specific policies to guide different types of development.

This document will supercede the NLLP when it is published in the next two years and a consultation will be carried out as part of the work to prepare this Local Development Plan.
