Contact lens king Ron is honoured by Queen
Ron Hamilton
Uddingston man Ron Hamilton has been awarded a CBE in the New Year’s Honours’ List for services to the contact lens industry.
The former Mossend Primary pupil led the invention and development of the world’s first daily disposable contact lens business before selling it to Bausch & Lomb in 1996.
At the time Ron believed the subsequent market entry by J&J (Acuvue) and CIBA (Focus Dailies) should have driven cost down to an affordable level.
But when this did not happen he decided to start his own company.
On the expiry of his five-year non-compete agreement, in 2001, he completed a new lens design and production process and launched Daysoft with the goal of replacing all other brands but at a uniquely low cost to wearers.
Daysoft Limited now employs 170 workers in its Blantyre base from where it designs, manufactures and sells millions of disposables, as well the newly launched Daysoft glasses, every month around the world through both opticians and online.
Ron said: “I was delighted to receive a CBE in the Honours’ List.
“Credit for this recognition belongs to very many friends and family members but, I believe, also to the many Daysoft customers from around the world who purchase from us.”
