Campaigners hope to rebuild a memorial to one of Scotland’s most celebrated industrial struggles after it was destroyed by vandals.

In January 1987 US engineering giant Caterpillar announced the closure of its factory at Tannochside, triggering a 103 day ‘occupation’ by the 1,200 employees.

In March this year, former workers unveiled a specially designed memorial dedicated to the struggle to save the jobs, but less than three months later, it was totally destroyed.

The memorial sat on open ground next to the Windmill Tavern, just 100 yards from the site of the plant, it was crafted in Corian, and lit with LEDs to symbolise the struggle.

Three columns represented each month of the struggle and 103 coloured inserts each represented a day of the occupation.

Now campaigners have set up a fresh appeal in the hope of raising at least £10,000 in order to have a new structure created.

Thorniewood councillor Bob Burrows, a former Caterpillar worker, said: “Along with many other people, I fought hard to keep our jobs.

“Now we are turning our efforts towards ensuring the mindless vandals who destroyed the monument do not wreck the Caterpillar legacy.

“We hope to raise at least £10,000 towards rebuilding the monument.

“First time it took nearly two years for us to fund raise, but knowing the commitment and generosity of my former colleagues and like-minded supporters, I’m confident it will take less time.”

A special Caterpillar Memorial Fund Account has been set up at North Lanarkshire’s Municipal Bank.

Donations can be made at any North Lanarkshire cash office or by bank transfer using Sort Code: 82-20-00 and Account Number: 90005528.

If making a bank transfer the three references needed to assist in allocating the payment are Municipal Bank Reference: 90005528, Municipal Bank Account name: Caterpillar Memorial Fund and Remitter Details (details of person making deposit).

After donations have been made e-mail COuncillor Burrows stating the date, the amount and from whom to records can be collected.
