Call for community action at Bellshill anti-social hot spots

RESIDENTS living near two anti-social hot spots in Bellshill are being urged to get on board a new community campaign.
The Bellshill Local Area Team (LAT) has launched a consultation process into the development and regeneration of the areas known as The Bing and Sandy Park.
The LAT is a partnership group including North Lanarkshire Council, Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, NHS Lanarkshire and Community Learning and Development.
It works with local residents, elected members, community groups and volunteer organisations on ways to improve the town.
The group was spurred into action after almost 150 reports of youth-related disorder and anti-social behaviour were made to police between The Bing and Sandy Park over the past year alone.
It is hoped the new campaign will transform the areas into valuable community resources.
Two consultation events were held in the town last week to give locals their say on how the areas should be developed.
Ideas discussed included creating dirt bike tracks, sports pitches, children’s play areas, gardens and vegetable patches on the sites.
Community cafes, shops and allotments were also suggested, while points regarding CCTV and lighting were also raised.
It is hoped as many local residents as possible will get involved and have their say on the proposals, and further consultation events will take place over the coming months.
The LAT will also engage with local schools and youth groups after the summer break to ensure young people in the areas can contribute.
The cost of the projects will be met through a variety of public and private sources and grant applications through the Bellshill Community Forum.
