Bothwell doctors distance themselves from surgery plans

DOCTORS this week distanced themselves from plans to build a surgery on Bothwell's Nature Trail – casting doubt on the controversial project.

The proposal to move from Bothwell Medical Centre to a new, bigger building in Clyde Terrace has angered environmentalists.

However, senior partner Dr Roy D'Silva insisted the doctors are happy where they are and have no plans to move.

The doctors lease their Uddingston Road site from builders Alexander Braidwood and Sons who have been in talks with South Lanarkshire Council over the Nature Trail land.

The developers claim the site there "ticks all the boxes" but deny there is any pressure on the doctors to move.

Council officials were approached before Christmas about selling a piece of ground fronting Clyde Terrace where a new surgery would be built.

The initial plans were deemed unsuitable and the developers returned with a proposal for a two-storey building covering a smaller chunk of the site.

Dr D'Silva said: "We have not applied to build a new surgery and anyone who has submitted plans has done so without a mandate from us.

"We are quite happy with our surgery premises and location, and we have no intention to move on."

Company director Scott Braidwood said the doctors still have a number of years left on their lease and there is no pressure on them to move, but he understood they hadn't yet made up their mind.
