Bookies decision put on hold
COUNCILLORS have delayed taking a decision on whether to grant planning permission for a new betting shop in Bellshill town centre.
Betting chain Paddy Power have applied to North Lanarkshire Council for consent to convert a former hot food takeway at 216 Main Street.
But the plan has sparked concern that there are already enough bookies in the town centre and a formal objection has been lodged by Bellshill Community Council.
The application went before a meeting of the council’s planning and transportation committee last week with council officials recommending that permission be granted.
However the committee agreed with a proposal made by Mossend and Holytown councillor Frank McNally, which was seconded by Bellshill councillor Harry Curran, that the application should be continued for a site visit by the committee members before any final decision is taken.
