Bogus caller warning after fraudsters target Holytown home

POLICE are hunting a callous trio of bogus callers after a string of similar incidents.

A woman and two men are said to have visited several homes in North Lanarkshire this week pretending to be from the local authority or water board.

The group told unsuspecting residents that they needed to inspect drains at their homes, but had the ulterior motive of stealing from them.

Officers are investigating three incidents which took place on Monday (September 3).

It is believed the group called at a home on O’Wood Avenue in Holytown, as well as at addresses in Bargeddie and Coatbridge.

Police have released descriptions of the suspects in the hope of attracting witnesses.

The woman is described as being aged between 20 and 24, 5’6” to 5’8”, slim with brown hair and was wearing a blue fleece and dark trousers.

One of the men is 20 to 25, 5’10”, slim and was wearing a dark skip cap, dark top and Henley jeans, while the other is 28 to 29, 5’5”, of stocky build and was wearing a dark baseball cap, a navy fleece and a light blue shirt.

They are said to be travelling in a silver, 54-plate car.

Detective Inspector Frew, who is leading the investigation, said: “The incidents which have been reported in North Lanarkshire are particularly concerning as the group are targeting the most vulnerable members of our communities.

“If any of the people described in these incidents attend your door, then do not allow them in and call the police immediately.

“Staff from the council and water board all carry ID badges. Do not let anyone in your house unless you are 100 per cent sure of who they are.

“I would ask anyone who has any information in respect of such incidents to call Coatbridge CID on 01236 502060. You can also give information through Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.”
