Better access at rail station
RAIL passengers with mobility difficulties will be among those to benefit most from a new lift-accessible bridge to be built at Motherwell Station.
Work due to start this week will see a temporary footbridge built between platforms 3 and 4 while the existing bridge is dismantled. The new lift-accessible bridge will then be built between platforms 3 and 4, where a new shelter will also be provided.
Platforms 1 and 2 are already accessible to wheelchair bound passengers.
The Motherwell plan is part of a UK-wide Access for All scheme, said to be worth 370m, which will also see improvement work taking place at stations including Rutherglen, Barrhead, Mount Florida and Kirkcaldy.
Rail bosses say disruption to passengers at Motherwell station should be minimal as all major construction work will take place at night and at weekends - but some of the work will involve the use of saws and cranes.
The project, managed by Network Rail and funded by Transport Scotland, is expected to be completed during summer this year.
David Simpson, Network Rail route director for Scotland, said: "We have seen a steady increase in passenger numbers throughout Motherwell station in recent years and it is an important hub for rail travel in North Lanarkshire."
Transport Minister Struan Stevenson said: "It is a key Scottish Government priority that access to transport links is made easier for all passengers.
"This investment will bring valuable benefits and increase opportunities to travel through improved station access at Motherwell."
