Bellshill lawyer stunned by demons claim
TWO lawyers were stunned after a witness in a gun threat case claimed they were possessed by demons.
The courtroom drama came as Anne McPhee was accused of telling the jury a pack of lies.
The indignant witness stretched out her right hand and told Bellshill solicitor Jim O'Dowd: "I cast out the evil spirits from you. May Jesus come down to save you."
Mrs McPhee, from Cleland, made a similar pronouncement to Glasgow solicitor Richard Lobjoie, who was also involved in the trial at Hamilton Sheriff Court last week.
Her evidence was key in the case against James McPhee (56), of Kirkcaldy, and his brother William (47), of Motherwell.
They were accused of having weapons, including a gun, and making threats outside Anne McPhee's home in October 2008.
Mr O'Dowd, of Bell Solicitors, admitted: "It was a bit strange. I've never come across anything like it before.
"When it was suggested she hadn't been telling the truth she raised her right hand and said she was casting out the evil spirits in us. It was very theatrical."
Despite the unnerving moment, Mr O'Dowd continued his questioning and the case had a successful outcome for him when his client was cleared of the charge.
