Badger sett damaged by metal hunters

BIG ATTRACTION: scrap metal buried at the site is believed to have attracted the culprits to the area.

Scrap metal hunters have been condemned for disturbing a badger sett in Ravenscraig.

The Times was contacted by a concerned reader who recently discovered a sett on the site had been damaged.

Following a police investigation, it would appear the area was disturbed as the culprits targeted metal buried underground.

We are not disclosing details of the location of the sett so as not to attract baiters to the area.

Police Scotland wildlife officer PC David Wood said the perpetrators had undone work aimed at protecting the badgers.

He said: “This is a known sett, which was identified by ecologists who assist developers on the site.

“An exclusion fence was erected around it to protect it from work being carried out.

“It would appear someone came on with a digger to carry out a metal theft. This was discovered by contractors and reported to the police.”
