SUPERMARKET chain Asda has lodged its formal application for planning permission to build a new store in Viewpark.

The firm and developers Macdonald Estates have submitted details of its proposals to build a £15 million store on a site in Laburnum Road which, it’s hoped, will create up to 200 new jobs in the area.

The submission follows a public consultation event at St Columba’s Boys’ Club at the end of last year at which Asda say their plans received overwhelming backing.

The proposed site takes in a vacant industrial unit and a football pitch at Laburnum Road, which has been declared surplus by the council.

It is planned for St Columba’s, who use the pitch for training, to relocate to an alternative site if planning permission is granted.

There had also been concern over road safety due to the proximity of a proposed petrol station at the site to John Paul II Primary.

But following discussions between the developers and the school’s parent council during December’s community engagement event this has been moved further from the school.

Lynsey Ross, Asda’s acting property communications manager, Scotland, said: “We are excited about our proposals for Viewpark and would like to thank everybody who took the time to attend the community engagement events and feed their views into the planning process.”
