All is rosy in the school garden

STAFF and pupils at Bellshill Academy saw their hard work over the past three years come to fruition last week with the official opening of the school’s new eco garden.
Local politicians, business people and supporters of the school were invited along as the school celebrated the opening of the garden, with members of the wider Bellshill community.
The project began in 2009 when a group of interested staff, led by teachers Ann Roulston and Elizabeth Mitchell, formed an eco committee.
Pupils then began collecting Morrisons vouchers and ordering gardening equipment and the committee soon involved the whole school in preparing an eco code which became the focal point of the work.
After putting in planters at the front of the school proved successful, the committee’s thoughts turned to expanding the garden into the west playground. Thoughts of a mural arose and the team began some serious fundraising.
Walter Baker of Bellshill Community Council got involved, soon becoming the school’s eco champion, and trees, tomatoes, potatoes and sunflowers were planted in the school grounds.
Claire Campbell of the art department then began working with S1/2 pupils and three Glasgow University students to develop the mural while a very generous donation from the estate of a former pupil, the late Dr William Combe, enabled the full development of the playground.
Local councillors supported the project with a community grant to help to fund a greenhouse.
