ORGANISERS of the first Viewpark Gala Day in more than a quarter of a century have chosen the lucky youngster who will be the Gala Queen.

Tannochside Primary School pupil Lauren McCluskey (11) will be the centre of attention when the big day takes place at the gala day park behind Burnhead District Hall on Saturday, June 23.

Assisting Lauren to carry out her duties will be ladies in waiting Elle McKean and Chantelle Quinn who also attend Tannochside Primary. The three were chosen after each of the children who applied were given a number with the ‘winners’ picked from a tombola drum by Agnes Johnstone, widow of Lisbon Lion Jimmy.

The boys’ champion will be chosen next week.

Organising committee Sharon Swan said arrangements for the big day were well in hand with a wide variety of attractions lined up to appeal to all members of the community.

These include the gala day parade, children’s rides, five-a-side football and other sports and traditional gala games - with sports co-ordinators and Motherwell FC coaches on hand to help out - plus stalls, live music and a food stall.

Fundraising efforts continue with a race night taking place in Burnhead Bowling Club on Saturday at 7.30pm.

Admission will be £3, payable at the door, with this including pie and peas during the mid-evening break.
