A Motherwell family had to be evacuated from their home after a fierce fire ripped through it and destroyed the roof.

The couple and their two children were awoken in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday) as the blaze took hold of their new build home in Vesuvius Drive.

One man was treated for burns injuries and neighbouring properties had to be evacuated as a precaution.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze at 5.10am and officers remained at the scene today.

One neighbour said: “We got woken up at 5am with the sound of sirens and got up to look and see what was going on.

“When I got to the window there were fire engines and police everywhere with their blue lights flashing.

“The flames were pretty high coming out of the roof so it maybe started in the loft and that’s why the roof is so badly damaged.

“They got the flames out and that’s when it collapsed, they must have put some amount of water on it because the flames were pretty bad.

“I think everybody in the street was watching it, you couldn’t go back to your bed with the noise that was being caused by the emergency services.

“They are a lovely young couple who keep themselves to themselves and this is the last thing they were needing to happen to them.

“The husband looked like he got an injury on his leg but the kids and the wife got out fine although she was very traumatised by it all.

“I don’t know how they’ll go about fixing it, maybe the roof will have to come off the entire block.

“The neighbours on either side will probably be out their houses as well because of the damage.

“I just feel so sorry for them all, it is everybody’s worst nightmare, a fire in the home.”
