PARTICIPANTS in the Caritas Awards scheme, five young people from Holy Family Church in Mossend, organised a Mary’s Meal backpack appeal as part of their 24 hours of parish involvement.

At the invitation of their parish priest, Father James Grant, and encouraged and aided by parishioner, Tony Begley, a volunteer worker with Mary’s Meals, the youngsters were encouraged to organise a collection of much needed essentials for children in Malawi.

The five, Samanatha Meechin, Carina May Laurie, David Cusack, Brian Stevenson and Euan McVie, produced an advertising flyer and spoke at all Sunday masses one weekend, encouraging fellow parishioners to donate backpacks for the charity.

They then collected them at all weekend masses two weeks later.

Father Grant said: “The response from the parishioners was overwhelming, with the quantity and quality of the backpacks and their contents astounding.

“The backpacks are now winging their way to Malawi, an extra Christmas present for the children there.”
