There is no excuse!

EVERY week 280 classes are held at venues throughout North Lanarkshire offering a diversity of fitness sessions designed to cater for all levels of fitness and ability.

Gym Based programmes:

North Lanarkshire Leisure's facilities such as the Aquatec in Motherwell and the Sir Matt Busby Sports Centre in Bellshill now provide a full range of activities including a general induction followed by more specific advice through 10 minute gym and personal training. Customers can also access monthly health and fitness information.

50s Plus:

This programme targets the 50 plus age group by providing day long activities. These activities are both group fitness based as well as gym based and participants can also use the swimming pool and gym areas as part of their days activity. Regular blood cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure checks are available.

Slimming NL:

Slimming NL offers healthy eating advice combined with lifestyle sessions to individuals with weight problems. As well as an exercise session, clients are issued with an NHs endorsed weekly fact sheet which provides information on healthy eating and lifestyle advice.

Get Active:

This programme provides an access point for individuals who a referring health practitioner or health agency feels would benefit from increased physical activity levels. The main focus is to provide an easy route for clients to begin exercising in a supportive environment.

Bodycheck Mobile Health and Fitness Service:

The Bodycheck service provides a mobile health and fitness service for residents of North Lanarkshire within the rural and regeneration areas. On board the bus as well as providing cholesterol, blood glucose and blood pressure checks, the Community Health and Fitness team offer a range of advice services looking at healthy eating, exercise and activity programmes.

Specialist Health Classes:

In addressing more specific health needs within the community a number of health specific programmes have been set up. These include: back care management sessions, falls prevention, cardiac rehabilitation, cardiac maintenance, and angina pathways.These classes have been established under the guidance of NHS Lanarkshire with the majority of clients aged 50+.Future programmes will include stroke rehabilitation exercise sessions.

External Projects:

Feel Well is a referral programme funded through the Scottish Executive to deliver screening for people aged 45–64 who have high BMIs.

Condition Management is a Scottish Executive programme looking at incapacity benefit claimants across Lanarkshire.

Routes to Health also deals with incapacity benefit claimants but more specifically those who reside within regeneration areas.

Active Lifestyles is a three year programme funded through the Big Lottery delivering physical activity and health information to young people aged 17–24. There are nine individual projects each dealing with young people in difficult life circumstances and may assist in future employment within the leisure industry.

Outreach:

The Community Health and Fitness Team also attend schools and community groups to provide mini fitness testing providing an opportunity to discuss the importance of fitness with children.
