Police are hunting a punter who used a hatchet to try to smash open a fixed odds betting machine at a Motherwell bookmakers.

The incident happened about 9.30 last night at Coral in Airbles Street. It’s thought he was after money, but his smash and grab bid was unsuccessful and he left empty-handed.

The suspect is described as 6ft in height with a slim build. He was wearing a white biker-style helmet with a black tribal design across the front, a red boiler- style suit and black gloves.
