A man who admitted using a golf club in a serious assault has been given a commmunity payback order instead of jail.

Ryan McGuire (32), a prisoner, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court after the attack on Richard McLeish at Mr Chef Tandoori in Craigneuk Street, Craigneuk, on May 16 this year. He admitted striking the victim repeatedly on the head with the golf club to his severe injury.

McGuire had been in custody awaiting the case, but Sheriff David Bickett ordered him to do 300 hours of unpaid community work within 12 months as an alternative to more time behind bars.

In addition, McGuire will be under supervision for 18 months.
