The head of Lanarkshire’s Muslim community is to open this year’s Bellshill Street Fair.
Ghulam Siddiquie, general secretary of the Lanarkshire Muslim Welfare Association, has accepted the invitation from event organisers Bellshill Community Council to do the honours at the event in May.
As usual the street fair will take place over the second holiday weekend in May - from Saturday, May 24 to Monday, May 26.
Earlier this year Mr Siddiquie received the MBE in the New Year Honours List in recognition of his work in creating racial harmony over more than 30 years.
Meanwhile North Lanarkshire Council has approved plans to close Main Street between Emma Jay Road and Motherwell Road for the duration of the event.
The closure will come into effect from 6pm on Friday, May 23, and last until 3am on Tuesday, May 27.
