Football fans in matchday brawl

FOOTBALL fans were slammed this week after a town centre brawl before Saturday’s Motherwell-Hibs match at Fir Park.

Police said up to 40 men were involved in clashes. Witnesses claimed some of those involved had weapons and set off flares.

The trouble broke out in Windmillhill Street about 2.15pm, 45 minutes before kick-off time.

A police spokesman said: “Our football disorder patrol provided an immediate response which ensured the scene was controlled quickly.

“The Hibs fans involved were contained and escorted to their bus and out of the area. No police officers were injured.

“Two males were arrested - one for breach of the peace and assault, the other for breach of the peace.”
