Bishop Joseph Devine attended two formal events last week to mark his retiral after 30 years in charge of the Diocese of Motherwell.

North Lanarkshire Council hosted a farewell lunch for him at Motherwell Civic Centre while Bishop Devine was one of the clergy who celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving at Motherwell Cathedral following the appointment of Archbishop Leo Cushley.

Archbishop Cushley, who’s from Uddingston, returned to Motherwell - where he spent time as an assistant priest in the 1980s - for the service last Thursday night.

He was joined by Bishop Devine and Bishop Joseph Toal of Argyll who has taken over responsibility for Motherwell Diocese until a successor to Bishop Devine is appointed.

Archbishop Cushley is a former chaplain at Our Lady’s High School and St Aidan’s High.

He spent four years as head of the Vatican’s English language section - acting as translator for the Pope - before succeeding Cardinal Keith O’Brien who resignedearlier this year after admitting misconduct.
