Canadian man John Roberts has supplied us with this photo of a motorcycle rider, possibly from Motherwell and taken in 1905.
John bought the pic an antiques fair in Victoria and says the name of the photography business is shown as F. Johnstone, Melville Drive, Motherwell.
He said: “My research shows the photograph was likely taken in 1905, one year after registrations were required for motorised vehicles throughout the United Kingdom.
“The ‘V’ prefix on the number plate was issued to the County Council of Lanark in 1904. Records show that in 1906, registrations were issued V306-V433, so it is likely this motorcycle was licenced in 1905.
“There is no indication of the name of the gentleman on the motorcycle.
“I thought that your readers would enjoy seeing this photo from nearly 110 years ago, found at an antiques fair 5,000 miles away.”
