Drunk set fires at home of ex

A SPURNED boyfriend started THREE fires at the home of his ex after turning up drunk in the early hours of the morning.

While panic-stricken Jennifer Stewart was trying to put out flames in the kitchen, vengeful Duncan McKinnon was already in the bathroom, setting a laundry basket alight.

Police officers who arrived then found a third fire in a bedroom which they managed to put out. Fortunately, no one was injured and damage was fairly minor.

McKinnon (21), of Anderson Street, Motherwell, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court last week.

He admitted starting the fires at Ms Stewart’s home in Glencleland Road, Craigneuk, on April 18 this year.

McKinnon is no stranger to the court as he has a previous conviction for setting off a smoke bomb during a football match between Hamilton Accies and Motherwell in 2010.

A fan suffered a minor injury on that occasion and McKinnon was given a three-year football banning order.

Sheriff David Bicket called for background reports in the latest case and deferred sentence.
